Hello and welcome to my new blog dedicated to my study abroad adventures! I'm Tiffany Sharma, a junior at Wellesley College, studying Music and Media Arts & Sciences. I will be in Copenhagen, Denmark this fall studying Graphic Design at DIS and Vocal Performance at the Royal Danish Academy of Music (RDAM)!
I love traveling and have been lucky enough to go all over the world, including India, Thailand, Germany, England, France, Italy, Spain, and even Luxembourg! However, I have never been to Denmark, let alone any of the Scandinavian countries, so I can't wait to explore a new country, experience a new culture, and stumble/mumble my way through a new language.
I will be in two core courses, Graphic Design Foundations Studio and Music: Vocal Performance. The graphic design course with DIS will let me finally study graphic design in college! I have taken a few collegiate art courses, but never graphic design, and I'm really excited to finally explore and understand more in this field that I'm so interested in. I'll keep you all updated on the course, our trips, and my projects and creations! My other core course is Vocal Performance at RDAM. I was so thrilled when I found out that DIS gives students the opportunity to cross register at the conservatory! I will take private lessons there, work with a coach, and maybe join some ensembles. I'll definitely blog about all my musical experiences here, so keep an eye (and ear) out for new music posts! In addition to my two core courses, I am taking another course, Virtual Worlds and Social Media, where we will study the effects of social media and new technology on society and how to best navigate these new platforms.
In Copenhagen I will be living in one of DIS's Living Learning Communities (LLC)! I was accepted into the Performative City LLC, so the fourteen of us in this LLC get to explore Copenhagen through the lense of performative art together. Over the course of the semester we will try to delve into Danish culture by exploring the underground music scene, see art exhibits throughout the city, and work on a creative semester project as a group. I'm also super thrilled about being in this LLC, because our dorm is literally right across the street from DIS's campus! DIS kept saying that we should be prepared for commutes anywhere between half an hour to an hour, but I definitely lucked out on this front! I'm living in a quad with three other girls, so that will be a new experience for me. The past two years at Wellesley I was in a triple with two of my best friends there, so I'm used to what that is like, but a quad will be a whole new adventure. Once I get there I will definitley do a housing post, so you can see exactly what my room is like and living in an LLC is like.
I also have been matched with a Visiting Host Family in Copenhagen. This means that I've been paired with a Danish family, and get to spend time with them a couple times each month, learning more about their culture and sharing mine with them. Since I'm not living with any Danish people in the LLC, this is a wonderful way for me to still experience Danish culture firsthand while abroad. I can't wait to meet them!
I'm super excited to explore the art and music scenes in Copenhagen, so you can count on lots of museum visits and concerts during my semester abroad. I can never stay in one place long however, so I will definitely be traveling around Europe as much as possible. I don't really know where I'll go yet, so be prepared for impulsive weekend trips!
I am also a BIG foodie, so there will be quite a few blog posts about my favorite places to eat in Copenhagen. I am vegetarian (have been all my life!) so it will be an adventure navigating food in Copenhagen since the Danes love their red meats and seafood. I'm excited to try new foods, but will also look for some of my fave comfort cuisines, like Indian and Thai. I've been told by previous DIS students that I will end up eating a lot of pastries while there, so if you want to see photos of some of my favorite treats, check out my Instagram account dedicated solely to food! (But don't worry, I'll post the best food photos here on the blog as well!)
I am so excited for the next few months abroad and can't wait to get to Copenhagen on August 18th! Thanks for checking out my blog, and don't forget to subscribe or keep checking back for new posts on life in Denmark, travel, classes, food, and much more!
